Presently, new approaches for malignant mesothelioma treatments are being put to test. Traditional mesothelioma treatments are usually combined or something new is being introduced. Examples include: gene therapy.
Gene therapy is a procedure for treating possible fatal or disabling diseases by altering the expression of a person’s genes in line a therapeutic goal. The objective and aim of gene therapy is centred on rectifying disease at DNA level and to compensate for the abnormal genes. Replacement gene therapy displaces a mutated gene, most often a tumor suppressor gene, and replaces it with a normal copy of that gene which function to control cell growth and division. The p53 gene, the most known and common gene altered in cancer has turned out to be a prime target for replacement of gene, and has been successful in preventing cell growth, preventing angiogenesis that is the development of a tumor’s blood supply, and to induce apoptosis.
Knockout gene therapy aims at the products of oncogenes (a gene that can stimulate the formation of tumour) with effort to rendering them inert and decrease the growth of cell.
As a result of increasing knowlegde of gene therapy in malignant mesothelioma treatments of cancer, their roles and functions, and the administeration and delivery systems, this therapy has a promising future.
There has been a great level of success in the detection of malignant mesothelioma cancers in its early stage, and the treatment options onces mesothelioma cancers is comfirmed has been improved greatly, but there are still many more cancers, mesothelioma cancers inclusive which can not be cured and still experiencing difficulty to treat effectively.
In the past years, researchers have learned so much about how cancerous cells vary from normal cells and in an effort to discover drugs without the possibly severe side effects of chemotherapy, have now discovered drugs which target the tumor itself while sparing the body’s normal cells.
