Types of pleural mesothelioma
By Eden Ali | June 20, 2007
There are two types of Pleural Mesothelioma:
1. Diffuse malignant: This type of pleural mesothelioma is cancerous in nature and it is the most deadly of all the types of pleural mesothelioma. The word “diffuse” means it is a kind of cancer that spreads rapidly, and uncontrollable.
Malignant mesothelioma, rare though, but are very serious and life threatening and also require more effective and strong treatments options.
2. Localized and benign mesothelioma: This type is non-cancerous is nature. The word “localized” mean it is a kind of cancer that invades a particular tissue or organ and its spread is very slow compared to malignant mesothelioma cells. Benign mesothelioma cells can be removed and treated surgically, they are generally not deadly in comparism to the other type, and are usually related to other causes of mesothelioma.
The most daeadly type of mesothelioma, that is diffuse malignant mesothelioma, is a cancer of the cells that makes up the pleura or membraneous lining around the outer part of the lungs and inner surrounding of the ribs and this type accounts for more than 75% of all cases of mesothelioma.
The accummulation of fliud in this region can generally be seen with the use of an X-ray on a chest, and can be heard during a simple physical examination of the patient, but a comfirmatory diagnosis of mesothelioma can only be made through the use of biopsy and pathological testing of samples taken from the cells.
The importantance of this is because in benign mesothelioma there are also pleural fluid accummulations and other tumors that also have a similar characteristics to mesothelioma. The Diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma are usually very difficult, which requires special microbiological laboratory stains, handled by an experienced pathologist in both the experiment and interpreting the results.
